How could wheat gluten be the source of the pet food recall?

September 23rd, 2009

I have heard that the problem with the wet pet food recall was that the company started using a different wheat gluten. I don’t understand how that would cause renal failure. can someone explain?

Wheat gluten is made from wheat which could have been contaminated by wheat rust (a fungus) prior to being used in the processing of the pet food.

What kind of food is appropriate for a cat?

September 23rd, 2009

Should I just give her dry cat food? Is it ok if I give her wet cat food too? Is it bad if I gave my cat human food to eat? What if it’s fish, can I give her that? Is it ok to give her milk?

Oh sure.

Wet cat food is perfectly fine.
It’s like a ‘Treat’ for them when we give them their favorite Wet cat food like 2 or 3 times a week.

Cats really love Wet can foods {Sliced} and not the mashed type…..with alot of
Gravy it them.
At least my cat does = )

I find that my Cat gets very tired of her boring DRY Cat food, no matter what type of band it is.

How do I tell if its food grade plastic? (pet food storage)?

September 23rd, 2009

Looking at a pet food container that has no reviews, Im gonna buy it in the store, if it doesnt say food grade plastic what should I look for? Thanks!

some plastics are too thin and over time erode into the things you may be containing inside it like food or water. some plastic containers are more expensive because it lasts longer and doesn’t erode as fast. that’s why you shouldn’t reuse your water bottle, like the dasani water bottles, for a long time because they erode into your water, so you just bring it to your local recycling plant. i know this, but i don’t know how you can tell if its good grade by just looking at it, sorry.

How do you deal with ants and pet food?

September 22nd, 2009

We have one of the worst houses for ant invasion… it’s older, surrounded by trees, and air-conditioned. We just got a kitty, and we can’t keep the ants out of his food. Any tips? Are there pesticides out there that are safe for pets?

Put the cat food bowl on top of a deep plate, like a pie plate, and fill the plate with water. It’ll be like a moat, the ants can’t get across the water to the food. Make sure he cat food bowl is centered. If one side is touching, it’s a bridge.

What is the best dry dog food for my Lab and mixed small breed puppy?

September 21st, 2009

I have been feeding my 1year old Lab Purina dog chow, but read an Answer yesterday that this was a bad choice. I am also getting a small, terrier mix puppy this weekend and want to start her out on a good food. Any recommendations? Please don’t condemn me for my dog food choice - I know now it was a bad one. I researched it yesterday after seeing the Dogfood analysis link.

First I don’t think condemning you would be the right thing to do. Sounds like you care, and that is very commendable. I agree that Purina dog chow isn’t a good choice. I have tried it and I noticed that my dogs stool was very yellow (undigested corn) and very loose. If I were you, I simply would look at the dogs stool and let that determine what is the right food. It should be dark (It means it was digested well), firm and compact. Smaller dogs need smaller sized bits to eat. They have a hard time eating chunks that are large. I don’t like watering down the food if I can get away with it. It’s better for the dog’s teeth to have hard food to help remove tater. Read the dog food bag. The first three ingredients’ is what the majority of the food is made up of. I like feeding my dogs something with rice in it. It agrees with them better and they like it too. Corn is harder for dog to digest, but not necessarily bad. They just need more of it to get what they need. That is harder on your pocket and can possible lead to weight gain for the dog and makes lots of poop! Just buy smaller sizes of dog food till you see that the stool looks right, and you don’t have to feed the dog as much food to maintain a healthy weight. Also the dogs coat will have a healthier look to it with the right dog food as well.

Proper Dog Nutrition

September 19th, 2009

Dog nutrition is all about nutrients, or what your dog eats as food to keep him healthy. There are six families of nutrients:

proteins, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. Dog nutrition is critical for the longevity of your dog. Proper

balanced pet diets increase the life-span of your dog. Dog nutrition is one of the most essential subjects to learn. Since

dogs are active animals, they do eat a lot and they need proper nutrition as well as humans do.

Dog nutrition is just as important, if not more essential, than loving your dog. If you want to truly show how much you love

and care about them it is essential that you keep them healthy with a proper diet. Dog nutrition is very crucial when

preparing dog food. We all know that the ideal food to feed to newborn puppies is their mother’s milk.

Pet foods are not regulated like our food is so it is critical to read the ingredient labels. General dog nutrition is the

same as human nutrition; the more natural, the better. Pet owners were devastated to learn that the food the manufacturers

passed off as safe was making their pets deathly ill. Some actually died before the food was withdrawn from store shelves.

Choose several excellent brands and alternate between them every month or so. This will help you to avoid any dangers

accidentally posed by one brand while ensuring that your pet receives the absolute best dog nutrition. Choosing a quality pet

food for your dog should not be difficult. However, since the pet food recall, it’s hard to know who to trust.

Pet Medical Recorder is a simple to use software tool which will generate a set of special forms to allow you to keep track

of all your dog’s medical and treatment information. It will keep records of vaccinations, worming and flea control, so you

can see at a glance when the treatment needs repeating.

Naturally we want our dogs to live with us for as long as possible. Natural oils must also be included in dog’s nutrition

because they are a source of energy and acids that provide your dog with the best skin and hair care.

What should pet food manufactures pay if a cat or dog has kidney damage- is sick but does not die?

September 18th, 2009

Pets and owners suffer -shouldn’t pet food manufacturers suffer some too?

Unfortunately, pets are considered property, and under the law, you can’t be compensated for pain and suffering for the loss of property. So, the most that these corporations are going to have to pay is the veterinary costs. So sad.

Is it safe to feed a dog cat food?

September 17th, 2009

My sister has a caviliar king charles, but it turns its nose up at all different varietys of dog food. The only thing that he does eat is cat food, but that is only very rare (a little bit every day or so). There is also a cat in the holsehold, so i guess its just copying her! Especially as he sits at the back door miowing, and he lays on the back of the sofas as the cat does,
Is this something to worry about, or can we continue to feed him the food that is intended for cats?
Human food is his favourite though, and we know that overall that can definately do him more harm than good.
We are just so worried about him!!

Any tips and advice would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks.

you are not suposed to feed the dog a cat food diet, although you cannot tell my dog that. Catfoods have a differnt make up, richer in fatty oils and higher in proteins. There is no harm if they eat it since dogs are by nature scavengers.

Human food, if organic and or doesn’t contain chemicals are good for your dog. Veggies are the best. it is the chemical additives you need to stay away from.

My dog hasn’t been ill because of his sneeking in the cat food. I have open feeders and the animals eat all the time. I had asked my vet and she said as long as it isn’t all the time and his only main food.

Cats should not eat dog food due to the lower fatty oils needed by cats as well as the additive to keep the urinary tracks from becoming infected.
