What is the best dog food for a dog with kidney disease?

March 27th, 2010

Well, my newly adopted dog was just diagnosed with kidney disease. They said it’s not bad yet, but that I should feed her some special kidney disease food. I take her to the vet in Petsmart (Banfield), so she recommended Hills K/D (the only kind they sell there).

Anyway, I was wondering what anyone thinks is the best dog food for kidney disease "treatment". Thanks for any suggestions!! :)
ps: it’s chronic kidney disease, in case it matters. And she’s only 3 years old. Thanks again!

The veterinarian I work for always recommends Hill’s K/D for kidney problems. Don’t get it confused with C/D. It helps bladder problems. Oh, and don’t feed her table scraps. Human food can damage the kidneys and liver.

What is a great dog food for my dog with a sensitive stomach?

March 20th, 2010

He is healthy and young Pomeranian(1 yr), but he either diarrhea or vomits up most everything he eats. I have changes dog foods many times, which I really don’t want to do anymore, I know that is not good for him either. Also I have tried making him food, like eggs/ham/rice…and that seemed to agree with him a little more, but not great. I just need a great healthy preferably softer dry food that is good for him! thanks!

When my whippet has soft stools I cut back his food to let him recover from what ever bug he has and only feed him small amounts of either boiled rice with natural yogurt, or some scrambled eggs cooked in very little oil and if I have some chicken in the fridge I boil that and shred it and serve that with some boiled rice/pasta.

But the trick is not to feed a dog with diarrhea too much in fact the vet would suggest you starve him during the day.
Good luck!

What type of dog food would you recommend?

February 16th, 2010

Personally I like Innova dog food for my dog. However, my cousin is going to be working at Petco and he can get a discount for whatever dog food he purchases from there. What, if any, dog food brands would you recommend from Petco. Ones without by products and cornmeal in them. What do you guys think about Blue Buffalo or IAMS or Natural Balance, etc.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PURINA ONE?

Iams actually isn’t a very good food, I’m looking at several of their foods now and the first ingredient is corn or corn meal and on the other ones, corn or some form of it is high up on the ingredient list. Yuck!
Think of it this way. Anything you can buy at a grocery store (ie walmart, Giant, Weis, or wahtever you have in your area) is goign to be like feeding your dog McDonald’s every day. Crappy food: lots of fillers which means your pet gains weight from that, plus eats more (fillers fill you up for shorter amount of time than good food) which costs you more and they put on MORE weight.. plus all the other various health reasons.

Blue Buffalo is excellent.
NB looks alright, but it looks like they really focus on veggies instead of meats. Dogs (and cats) are "obligate carnivores" they HAVE to have meat..

This is a good site to give you some ideas.

If money is an issue, I always recommend Costco’s Brand, Kirkland. It’s a decent food for the price.
Good luck

What brand of dog food should I start feeding my puppy?

January 18th, 2010

I don’t want something as expensive as The Science Diet, but I also don’t want a cheap dog food. What would be a good quality, healthy dog food for my pup?

I’m not necessarily looking for a certain type; I’d just like to know a good brand. Thanks in advance!
Also, I live in a small town. I have been buying her food from Tractor Supply, Co. So if you could name a brand from that store, that would be wonderful.

Pedigree, Purina, Beneful, Ol’roys, Iams, and Science Diet are all CRAP. They are filled with fillers, indescribable meat by-products, and chemicals. Corn, wheat, and soy are all very hard to digest. I recommend a grain-free brand such as Blue Buffalo, Canidea, Taste of the Wild.

What dog food should i be feeding my new dog?

December 29th, 2009

I just rescued a 3 year old tricolor sheltie. He is the cutest guy ever and i want to feed him the right dog food so he doesn’t get sick. What dog food should i feed him? I know there are alot of crap food out there. What dog food do you feed your dog and they do awesome on. I would like to find something that he would like but has no corn and soy in it. Frist few ingredients must be meet. Preferabble fish or turkey. Meat that shelties would eat in the wild. He is about 15 pounds.

If you have the time and the interest, you could consider home cooked meals. Here’s one site with dog food recipe: http://www.monkeysee.com/play/6572-serving-dog-food
This way, you pick out the content yourself and have complete awareness of quality of product.
If you want a dog food, consider something that has no recent history of recalled product or repeat recalls in the past years. Some to consider:

Some dog foods are labeled "organic" or "holistic" but some of these have been recalled due to inferior gluten products that were in other foods recalled during the massive series of recalls that started some years ago.

How expensive is it to make homemade dog food?

December 17th, 2009

About how expensive is it to make homemade dog food? My four dogs (3 large, 1 small) are currently on Science Diet (Large and Small bites) and it costs about $25-30 a week to feed them all. Does making homemade dog food with quality ingredients generally save money over feeding commercially marketed brands like Science Diet?

You’ll have to do your own math here, based upon the ingedients you wish to us.

For me, it was slightly more expensive to make my own– boiled chicken with baked sweet potato and parsley. The parsley was home grown.. I factored that at .0$ because I was using as much in my own cooking as it was for the dog. The split chicken breast I could purchase at about 99cents a pound when I was lucky. Same price for the sweet potato.. so I added the cost of the energy to fire up my stove & stovetop, as well as the price for my time.. And the multiple vitamins I added… Probably +$1.50 a pound, but it was worth it.

You can stretch that and reduce the price per pound by ’stretching’ the chicken and potato with boiled rice, but of course you have to keep a closer eye on nutrition, since dogs aren’t primarily vegetarians, I’d be reluctant to go too heavy on the rice for fear of ill effect.

So, start with your own recipe, factor in price per pound of the components, divide by the ratio/s in the recipe, then you’ll have your price. If you’re lucky enough to have a hunter in the family, or can get your hands on free meat, then your cost is reduced accordingly.

How do I switch my dog from people food to dog food?

November 16th, 2009

My dog has been eating people for a little under a year. When I tried to switch him to dog food, he puked after about 5 pieces. The next day it was the same after about 10 pieces.

What "people" food have you been feeding him?

I can understand why your dog doesnt want to eat "insta-meal".

Try a raw diet instead. Here are some resources to help you out. www.rawfed.com/myths, www.rawmeatybones.com, www.rawlearning.com, and www.bigdogsporch.com
A raw diet is typically cheaper than any food that comes out of a bag.

How long before dry dog food exposed to the air goes stale?

November 7th, 2009

I don’t want to know about what air-tight or other containers to keep it in, I am only interested in how long before dry dog food exposed to the air becomes stale? A week, a few days, or a few hours?

Your best bet is to call the customer service line on the package.
Most bagged dog kibble is good for a year or so, as long as it is not exposed to mold or moisture. It is laden with tocopherols, which is basically vitamin E/soybean oil, a natural preservative. It doesn’t go stale, but may spoil if it is not kept in a dry, clean place.
