How long before dry dog food exposed to the air goes stale?
November 7th, 2009
I don’t want to know about what air-tight or other containers to keep it in, I am only interested in how long before dry dog food exposed to the air becomes stale? A week, a few days, or a few hours?
Your best bet is to call the customer service line on the package.
Most bagged dog kibble is good for a year or so, as long as it is not exposed to mold or moisture. It is laden with tocopherols, which is basically vitamin E/soybean oil, a natural preservative. It doesn’t go stale, but may spoil if it is not kept in a dry, clean place.

Well, I’m not very sure how fast can the dog food go stale if exposed to the air without being contained properly but I’m gonna guess anyway. If it’s under a hot, humid weather like my country’s, then I guess in a few days? It’ll definitely rot even faster if water goes in it. Fungus will probably grow all over it.
But what I do know is, the moment the bag of food is open & if the dog food is not put in the fridge immediately after opening it, all the nutrients & whatever good stuff that was contained in the bag is gone.
