What brand of dog food should I feed my dog?
March 12th, 2011
I am getting a pup (sheltie) in about a month, and don’t know what kind of dog food to feed. I feed my cats Orijen dry and Merrick wet, but don’t know if they make dog foods. What dog food do you recommend and why?
I would recommend the same for your dogs then - Orijen makes a great puppy food and Merrick has one of the widest, more creative selections of quality canned dog food - including a puppy formula

Gabbie and Sammy LOVE raw meat!
They do make dog food, but I find that raw meat diets for carnivorous animals(dogs, cats, ferrets, etc) far beats any processed dog food.

I would recommend any food that comes from a vet’s office.
I swear on that stuff, it’s so good fro your animals! It’s all I feed my cats and it’s all I fed my previous dog. It’s so healthy for them.
BUT
If you wish not to feed them food from a vets office (seeing it can get a little bit pricey), try asking a vet instead what they recommend. Tell them you have a budget (if you do) and they’ll recommend the best food your little puppy.

i would say life abundance dog food. it is dry food which is better for dogs (given it to them while there young so there stomach is used to it).
its all natural and has nutrients it that can prevent your dog from getting sick.
after 6months try not to change the food, its tough on the dogs stomach if you do that. and if you do want to change it though, do it slowly. mix some with its other food then keep adding more over time.
hoped i help!

If you really don’t care about cost, then I say go with Merrick BEFORE GRAIN Salmon. That stuff is the best! All the ingredients are whole food, with ZERO fillers. Now if you wanted to take it one step down, then I would go with Holistic Select Puppy Chow…this is really good stuff too. Again, all whole foods, just minus the fancy fruits (Acai, Pomegranate, Blueberry, etc) which are in the Merrick mix. The Merrick before grain flavors are: beef, chicken, salmon, and buffalo. It comes in a black bag, and you can’t find it at Petco, or Petsmart, so try looking in a specialty shop.

hey you!
TBH I don’t really think even the ‘best’ kibbles are worth it. I really prefer the RMB’s diet with the occassional packet of ground meat. All my dogs do best on this, everything from dental health to coat and skin, energy levels, less stool, health issues have been cleared up..all been vastly improved in health. I have tried all the ‘high quality’ kibbles and they are not even a consideration for me now. Even Orijen has about 30% fruit and veg which a dog does not need/digest well but if you need to feed kibble then it probably is the best one to go for. I have added links for you to find out more.

NutroMeagan
When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products, ground yellow corn, and any artificial flavors or colors.
Nutro makes excellent food. They have 3 lines: Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra. With all three lines you will get an all natural, human grade food with added vitamins and minerals; no ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups; no by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines; and no artificial flavors or colors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. And all of their foods are 100% guaranteed! Max is your basic premium food, and from what I’ve seen, the lowest priced premium food on the market. Natural Choice has taurine added and is more geared towards dogs with specific needs (i.e. sensitive skin, sensitive stomach, etc.). And Ultra is a holistic food with more fruits and vegetables, also known as super foods, which help with your pups immune system, joints, heart, vision, brain, etc.

After about 3hrs of searching, this is my conclusion on the cheapest dog foods of good quality (some kind of specific meat whole or meal etc as first ingredient) I used my ADULT 45lb English Bulldog as an example. All of the prices are from petsmart.com I was really suprised with the chart! All feeding amounts are based on specific food recomendations. And obiviously I didn’t include every food possible, but I did search through the 200+ dry foods on petsmart =) I hope this helps!
