What brand of dog food should I start feeding my puppy?
January 18th, 2010
I don’t want something as expensive as The Science Diet, but I also don’t want a cheap dog food. What would be a good quality, healthy dog food for my pup?
I’m not necessarily looking for a certain type; I’d just like to know a good brand. Thanks in advance!
Also, I live in a small town. I have been buying her food from Tractor Supply, Co. So if you could name a brand from that store, that would be wonderful.
Pedigree, Purina, Beneful, Ol’roys, Iams, and Science Diet are all CRAP. They are filled with fillers, indescribable meat by-products, and chemicals. Corn, wheat, and soy are all very hard to digest. I recommend a grain-free brand such as Blue Buffalo, Canidea, Taste of the Wild.

I love my family!
you can try purina puppy chow

pedigree is easily digestable best to keep the dog on what it was fed before and slowly switch i mean 3 or 4 of the new kibbles the first day and so on

I feed all of my dogs Purina’s Beneful Healthy Radiance. For a growing puppy, I’d add cottage cheese to the food.

if price is the issue, you can always feed her iams or eukaneuba. they usually sell it at grocery stores. it’s not the best, but if it’s what you can afford, go for it.

Science Diet is overpriced sh*t anyway…
Good quality food is key to your puppy’s health.
Check out http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com .
Find a food in the 4 or 5 star range at the very least (note: Science diet is a ONE STAR food…how they charge so much for this crap is beyond me).
Kirkland by Costco is a great affordable choice if you are looking to not spend a lot.
I feed Innova and find it reasonably priced but it certainly still isn’t "cheap".
The better the food you feed, the less you will spend on vet bills later on in your dog’s life.
Your dog will also have less waste elimination…aka he’ll crap less…if you feed him a high quality food versus a not quality one.
You also feed less of a quality food, so you really end up spending less in the long run…less by far.
Good luck and do your research!

I have two dogs.
When we first got my first dog Sonny he was eating Iams. Once the recalls came we switched him over to Beneful. He seemed to like it a lot and there was no difference with his coat or his health in general. When we first got my second dog Chance, he was eating Eukanuba which is very expensive. We didn’t switch him off of it since he was still a puppy and you don’t want to mess up his stomach but once he was about 1 or 1 1/2 he was switched to Beneful too since my other dog was on it. After a while the two were switched to Puppy and Dog Chow for reasons which I can’t remember.
Really unless you believe in all the organic and natural foods or wet vs dry it only matters the type of food not what the brand is.
Also, I’ve never really heard of Tractor Supply, co. so i can’t help you there.

Oh awesome, Tractor supply has a good selection!
try finding Taste of the wild. If here adult weight isn’t going to be above 40 lbs then go for it. If he’s a larger breed, then go with Chicken soup puppy food.

I have lost all confidence in the commercial dog food industry since the melamine contamination; I’ve switched my dog to her species’ natural diet: raw meat on the bones.
I feed raw/prey model; my 50-pound shar-pei mix gets about 12oz a day, but when I have a gorge meal for her, like a turkey carcass that will take her 4-5 hours to eat, she won’t be hungry or interested in food for 2-3 days. In general, a dog is fed 2-3% of the ideal body weight each day. A puppy gets 2-3% of the ideal anticipated adult weight each day, divided into 4 meals.
The ideal diet should consist of approximately 80% raw meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% raw liver, 5% other raw organs, the occasional egg, shell and all, raw. Puppies start off with chicken breast, since it has the most accessible edible bone.
NO veggies, NO fruit. Dogs cannot digest vegetables or fruits; they lack the enzyme necessary to break down cellulose. Look at cows: they have the enzyme, and they still need four stomachs and they have to eat the cellulose twice. Dogs have one stomach and a straight-and-simple digestive tract. So fruit tastes good, but it’s nutritionally null for your dog.
They also don’t have flat-topped grinding molars: the dog’s back teeth are carnassials, designed to scissor through meat and bone, to break up prey animal carcasses into chunks small enough to swallow. This is something every dog has to learn; sometimes they have to hork some pieces back up, shear off a piece, and try again. Totally normal.
NO grains; again, dogs can’t digest cellulose, and the other ingredients are the primary cause of allergies and diabetes in dogs.
NO dairy; dogs are lactose intolerant: another digestive enzyme they don’t have.
NO supplements other than a spoonful of deepsea fish body oil for the Omega-3 that corn-finished meat does not contain.
Chewing up raw meat takes work, as does chomping through the incidental bones. The exercise involved in handling Big Complicated Food (several days’ worth), and in breaking up bones into swallowable chunks, keeps dogs teeth clean and satisfies a part of their brain that nothing else touches. These dogs are less hyper, friendlier and a bit more calm and satisfied.

Why do people want to thumb me down? do you know how long i’ve been researching. And it definitely leaves my dog a beautiful coat. I hate you. Don’t know why i want to share my experiences with you when you disapprove and don’t even consider properly. hmph.

I would stay away from food that has a lot of corn and by products in it. That can cause more allergies for dogs. We don’t have a tractor supply around here.. but i looked at the website the 4health formulas look good..no by products or corn. Blue and Diamond are also great premium dog food. Just look at the ingredients.

TSC has the dog foods I recommend. Blue Buffalo and Taste of the Wild. I feed my dogs Taste of the Wild. The large bag costs around 64 dollars, and BB is slightly more expensive. You are paying about 20 dollars more for these than Iams, beneful, etc. I think its worth it.
