What dog food should i be feeding my new dog?

December 29th, 2009

I just rescued a 3 year old tricolor sheltie. He is the cutest guy ever and i want to feed him the right dog food so he doesn’t get sick. What dog food should i feed him? I know there are alot of crap food out there. What dog food do you feed your dog and they do awesome on. I would like to find something that he would like but has no corn and soy in it. Frist few ingredients must be meet. Preferabble fish or turkey. Meat that shelties would eat in the wild. He is about 15 pounds.

If you have the time and the interest, you could consider home cooked meals. Here’s one site with dog food recipe: http://www.monkeysee.com/play/6572-serving-dog-food

This way, you pick out the content yourself and have complete awareness of quality of product.
If you want a dog food, consider something that has no recent history of recalled product or repeat recalls in the past years. Some to consider:

Some dog foods are labeled "organic" or "holistic" but some of these have been recalled due to inferior gluten products that were in other foods recalled during the massive series of recalls that started some years ago.

I feed Nutro Natures Choice. I use the Large Breed Puppy Lamb and rice formula which wouldn’t apply to your little guy.
Make sure you change his food over gradually and congrats on a new dog. Shelties are great fun!

Start feeding your rescued sheltie the same food the shelter was feeding. Do sum research then pick a food & gradually introduce it by mixing it in w\the shelter food.

If hes very active and runs around like wild child, feed him Innova Evo . Its because it has more protein that requires an active dog to burn. If not , the regular Innova, less protein. Both very good..GREAT food line. They have one with red meat, chicken, turkey, and some others like less fat etc. All high quality bouquets carry this brand. Theyre 100% doggy lovers, so they know what the real deal is.

Wellness made a lot of dogs very ill, vomiting. Be aware of that brand.

feed it the food from the shelter. do some research on foods and then gradually mix the new food into the old food over a two week period, maybe less. watch their poop, if it’s runny then lessen the mixture, if it’s firm then speed up the process. how much do you want to spend on food? how many times a day do you want to feed them. there are a lot of foods out there and a lot of different theories on how and what to feed them. there are premium foods out there, but you are going to pay a hefty price. i would buy the best food that you can afford. i’d also stay away of very cheap brands as you get what you pay for. the theory is the higher the price the more nutrition and less feeding, meaning your dog is using up everything in the food and it’s not all just fillers that’ll make them crap multiple times a day. i’d go with a mid level food like iams, eukanuba, or pro plan. i’ve fed my huskies and lab iams for a while, but i’m switch to costco’s kirkland brand because it’s actually better then aforementioned foods and about $15 cheaper for a 40lb. bag. i’ve also fed them blue buffalo, real pricey so stopped feeding it. you also want to change their foods every couple of months so they aren’t starved of any nutrients that may be missing from one particular food. blue buffalo is known as a holistic food, meaning it’s all encompassing of all daily nutrients, but like i said, you’ll pay more. my dogs are very active and i feed them twice a day and once or twice a week they get real chicken or beef, usually leftovers, so it’s not that much. i’ll also mix tuna in with the food and they loooooove that so much. they also get raw vegetables when i’m cutting them up for my own salads, so a premium food is not really required for mine. for one, a sheltie is not really in "the wild" so they don’t need "wild’ food. if they were they’d be eating raw meats which is not healthy. go to the following site and read the reviews on all the foods. if you can afford the premiums then more power to you, but i think you’d just be wasting your money when a mid level food is all you need with a few supplemental feedings of meat and vegetables. many active dogs do just fine on the midlevel stuff. check out the costco kirkland brand, it’s actually rated higher then many of the other brands and i believe they even have turkey and salmon.
