How do I prepare a cat food omelet?

March 19th, 2011

So, I wanted to make a cat food omelet, with cat food in the center of it and serve at a social gathering. Do any of you have recipes?
I’m actually serious — people in my family enjoy cat food.

I made cat food quiche once. It was delicious. I’d go with the quiche instead as it is a fancier dish. Just a thought.

What is the human equivalent to dog food or cat food?

March 17th, 2011

I find it remarkable that a dog or a cat can live a long healthy life by eating only one thing their whole lives. My cats eat nothing but Purina Indoor Formula dry cat food. They’ve been doing it for years, and they seem healthy and happy. Apparently, this one food has everything they need.

Why isn’t there something like that for people–an all purpose food? It seems like it would be the perfect thing for college students and other people who live in financial dire straights because you could make it really cheap. Maybe you could even have it in different flavors for the sake of variety.

Dog and cats are do not have the same digestive systems that you and I do. In the wild, they would eat raw meat and nothing else. While I’m sure kibble contains all the "nutrients" they need, I’m not sure they’re as "happy & healthy" as they would be if they ate their natural diet. I give my dog dry kibble, but I mix in either some canned dog food, or a little bit of cooked chicken.

Humans require sugar, fiber, and protein to survive, so it’s not as easy to make a "one-stop food." Other than perhaps a meal replacement bar, which I wouldn’t recommend anyone live on, I don’t think your "human kibble" exists. Although… did you ever see the movie Soilent Green? lol! :-D

What kind of cat food should I feed my pregnant cat?

March 16th, 2011

I keep reading about different kinds of cat foods you should feed a pregnant cat. My cat is an outdoor cat and is due to deliver kittens in a while. What type of food do you recommend?

It is important to feed her a high quality kitten food during her pregnancy and after the kittens are born. I personally feed and recommend, ‘Orijen Cat and Kitten dry formula’, it is a grain free food and IMO, the best dry food out there!

I also agree if you can get her inside it would be best for her and her kittens and since she has not delivered them yet, now would be a good time to get her use to being in the house. I would also keep her limited to one room.

Kittens are wonderful, little joys but unfortunately the world is full of unwanted kittens. I too would recommend getting your female spay.

Good luck!

How much cat food should a medium sized adult cat eat?

March 15th, 2011

I plan on getting a cat in a few weeks and would like to know everything i can before then. This is a regular sized cat, not too fat, not too skinny. Maybe roughly 10lbs. So how much canned food should I give her? Is it okay to alternate between canned and dry food? If so, how much dry food should she eat?

just small cat bowl of dry food or one can twice a day, morning and night :)

What canned cat food is out there that is similar to i/d feline cat food?

March 13th, 2011

My kitten is allergic to most foods sold in stores, but found i/d feline cat food and we have not had a problem since. the price of the food though is $1.80 per can, and I am having trouble affording it. Is there any cat food out there that works for digestive problems but is cheaper then the i/d food? Even at a store or online?

Thank you for the help!

Have an honest discussion with your vet. They are more interested in your pet’s health than making money. If the only reason your kitten is on it is allergies, she may be able to eat another type of food. I believe ID has chicken in it, so Natural Balance limited ingredient chicken formula may work for her.

Although I’ve sent a link from Pet Food Direct, canned food can be heavy and expensive to ship by the case, so you should check around and see if you can find it locally (if your vet says it’s okay). I believe Petco may carry it. The larger cans are usually the least expensive. If you switch, please do so gradually, adding a little bit of the new food each day over the course of a week or two until the cat is just eating the new food.

Good luck to you!

Edit: If the ID does indeed contain pork as Cat Lover says, then it’s true that a duck and pea or venison and pea food would be your best choice. Natural Balance makes that also.

What brand of dog food should I feed my dog?

March 12th, 2011

I am getting a pup (sheltie) in about a month, and don’t know what kind of dog food to feed. I feed my cats Orijen dry and Merrick wet, but don’t know if they make dog foods. What dog food do you recommend and why?

I would recommend the same for your dogs then - Orijen makes a great puppy food and Merrick has one of the widest, more creative selections of quality canned dog food - including a puppy formula

What is the best dog food to feed large breed dogs and small breed dogs?

March 10th, 2011

I have a Jack Russell and a Northern Inuit and was wondering if there is a particular food that would suit each breed?
Why do they have large breed dog foods and small breed dog foods? Whats the difference?

There are a lot of good dog food brands out there. when purchasing any dog food, ALWAYS read the ingredients. you will be amazed what is in the popular dog food brands. The first ingredient should ALWAYS be meat.

When choosing food for my Shiba Inus I researched alot online to see what was common food allergies with this breed. EVERY breed is different so I would recommend you research this for each of your dogs. Ex: Shibas are prone to having bad allergies to lamb. I noticed within a week of changing their food that my shibas coats were SO shiny. It amazed me how big of a difference it has made in their health, skin & coats. Now I avidly only purchase "real" food for my babies, none of the cheap stuff, even for their treats.

As for large/small breed dog food… you should never feed a small breed, large breed dog food, or vice versa. Not only are they bigger bites of food, but more importantly they contain the key ingredients for dogs of a certain weight. Larger dogs need more nutrients and vitamins and maybe even a different TYPE of vitamins. And smaller dogs do not need the same amount as a large dog. Although most of these lg/sm breed bags, i agree, are a marketing ploy. You will notice with the better dog food brands there are usually not small/large breed bags. they are all the same, just change of portion size.

just an FYI- I am currently unemployed and on a strict budget. I say that bc you do NOT need to spend an insane amount of money to take care of your animals. It is a little more costly bt well worth it! The way I see it is, "would you feed nothing by byproducts and corn meal to yourself or your own kids?" It would be like us living 24/7 off of nothing but chicken flavored chips or coke. lol.

Good luck!

Do geriatrics have to prove that they own pets when buying pet food in bulk?

March 8th, 2011

One of my co-workers told me, that because dog/cat food is so cheap to buy in bulk, it’s common for old people to eat it. For that reason, he said, it’s common grocer policy to ask elderly people to prove they own pets when buying pet food in bulk.

Please, someone tell me this isn’t true.

That’s absurd.

Does the food your dog eat really make a difference in how much he defacates?

March 7th, 2011

I have fed my lab Purina Dog chow since the day I brought him home. My son says only feed him this kind of dog food or he will poop all over the garage while I am gone to work. My son was buying the dog food until he moved out about a week ago. I buy dog food in 50 lb bags 5 at a time. Its on sale now so I am thinking about getting a couple more bags.
My friend told me he gets his dog generic dog food and it works just as well and is cheaper. What is your take on dog food and should I just stick to the 50 lb bags of Purina Dog Chow?

Changing your dog’s food could cause temporary diarrhea. Also, some dog foods could cause your dog to poop more in that they may be less nutritious and so your dog will need to eat more to get the same amount of nutrition (the cheaper foods may have more filler.)
