How do you find out about pet food recalls?

February 15th, 2011

I’m concerned about all of the pet food recalls. How do you find out about new recalls?

Yes, sign up at the site Bi-Petual listed.

Just hope that if there are any recalls you find out before your cat is sick. In 2007 I took both of my cats to the vet because they had stopped eating and lost weight. They did blood work and discovered serious kidney damage. It was a real head scratcher for the vet for 36 hours, until the Menu Foods poisoned cat food recall was announced. At least my cats had already been hospitalized and treatment begun. Cost me $3k, and the vet estimated that both cats would have a shorter life span than normal. I still have Sophie, but Shortie died 6 months later. I love that Menu Foods "promised" to reimburse owners for their vet bills, and no one has seen a single dime from them.

What is the best dog food for a dog with kidney disease?

March 27th, 2010

Well, my newly adopted dog was just diagnosed with kidney disease. They said it’s not bad yet, but that I should feed her some special kidney disease food. I take her to the vet in Petsmart (Banfield), so she recommended Hills K/D (the only kind they sell there).

Anyway, I was wondering what anyone thinks is the best dog food for kidney disease "treatment". Thanks for any suggestions!! :)
ps: it’s chronic kidney disease, in case it matters. And she’s only 3 years old. Thanks again!

The veterinarian I work for always recommends Hill’s K/D for kidney problems. Don’t get it confused with C/D. It helps bladder problems. Oh, and don’t feed her table scraps. Human food can damage the kidneys and liver.

What is a great dog food for my dog with a sensitive stomach?

March 20th, 2010

He is healthy and young Pomeranian(1 yr), but he either diarrhea or vomits up most everything he eats. I have changes dog foods many times, which I really don’t want to do anymore, I know that is not good for him either. Also I have tried making him food, like eggs/ham/rice…and that seemed to agree with him a little more, but not great. I just need a great healthy preferably softer dry food that is good for him! thanks!

When my whippet has soft stools I cut back his food to let him recover from what ever bug he has and only feed him small amounts of either boiled rice with natural yogurt, or some scrambled eggs cooked in very little oil and if I have some chicken in the fridge I boil that and shred it and serve that with some boiled rice/pasta.
But the trick is not to feed a dog with diarrhea too much in fact the vet would suggest you starve him during the day.
Good luck!

What’s the difference between cat food and dog food?

March 15th, 2010

I’m just wondering what the difference is and why cats can’t eat dog food and vice versa.

***NO, I’m not planning on feeding my dog cat food or my cat dog food***

Like…what would happen if I started feeding my dog cat food?

I’m just curious.. :]

Dogs and cats have unique nutritional needs. High quality foods are specifically tailored to the dietary requirements of the intended species. Therefore, it is not wise to feed an exclusive diet of dog food to cats, nor cat food to dogs.

Cats most definitely cannot subsist on dog food alone. Their dietary needs are harder to meet than those of dogs. For instance, cats must consume an amino acid called taurine to prevent heart problems. Dogs do not need to consume taurine–they can synthesize it internally. Therefore, cat foods are supplemented with taurine. Dog foods generally are not.

Because dogs are natural scavengers (cats are natural predators), their dietary requirements are less stringent than those of cats. Some cat foods may, in fact, be nutritionally replete for dogs. Others are not. However, cat foods are generally richer and more fattening than dog foods. Dogs that eat cat food may gain weight or suffer upset stomachs, even if they don’t develop nutritional deficiencies.

The moral of the story is that your dog should eat dog food, and your cats should eat cat food. The simplest way to make that happen could be to end the feeding free-for-all and offer meals to your pets in separate rooms.

Finally, please note that most cats and dogs can tolerate an occasional nibble of each others’ foods. However, serious problems may occur if cats eat only dog food, or vice-versa.

Have there been any pet food recalls lately?

February 19th, 2010

After that last one a couple years ago, I’m still a little scared about it happening again. I quit buying a brand that was supposedly a higher-end quality pet food because they had some of their foods on the list. I buy my cats the best food I can that they like, but I still worry about it.

I dont have a pet …my husband hates animals…..and out here there is only one brand of pet food available in the market. …. Indians dont care much about pets…they are given our left overs and they eat whatever they get and never get sick …they are very immune to anything thats given to them. we dont even have many pet care centres and the ones we have is 1000 kms away. i am overwhelmed by the love westerners shower upon their pets.

What type of dog food would you recommend?

February 16th, 2010

Personally I like Innova dog food for my dog. However, my cousin is going to be working at Petco and he can get a discount for whatever dog food he purchases from there. What, if any, dog food brands would you recommend from Petco. Ones without by products and cornmeal in them. What do you guys think about Blue Buffalo or IAMS or Natural Balance, etc.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PURINA ONE?

Iams actually isn’t a very good food, I’m looking at several of their foods now and the first ingredient is corn or corn meal and on the other ones, corn or some form of it is high up on the ingredient list. Yuck!
Think of it this way. Anything you can buy at a grocery store (ie walmart, Giant, Weis, or wahtever you have in your area) is goign to be like feeding your dog McDonald’s every day. Crappy food: lots of fillers which means your pet gains weight from that, plus eats more (fillers fill you up for shorter amount of time than good food) which costs you more and they put on MORE weight.. plus all the other various health reasons.

Blue Buffalo is excellent.
NB looks alright, but it looks like they really focus on veggies instead of meats. Dogs (and cats) are "obligate carnivores" they HAVE to have meat..

This is a good site to give you some ideas.

If money is an issue, I always recommend Costco’s Brand, Kirkland. It’s a decent food for the price.
Good luck

Is it true that pet food contains meat from dead cats and dogs?

February 16th, 2010

I recently heard that manufacturers are putting dead cats,
dogs ,road kill, in our pet food.
If you see the word "meat" that means cat or dog bodies (meat).
If this is true, I will NEVER buy dog or cat food again!
So, please answer factually……..does canned pet food
contain meat from dogs or cats?
Thank you.

Yep.

If you see the word "chicken meal," "meat meal" or "meat and bones meal," this is the dry byproduct of a lot more gross stuff than dead (SICK) dogs and cats. Throw in their flea collars, the plastic bags their dead bodies were in, the dead cows that didn’t make it to the slaughterhouse, roadkill, etc. It is unbelievable what these manufacturers are allowed to put into our pet food! There was an outcry, but the practice goes on.

Animals are fatty, so in the process of creating the meal, they skim off the grease, and you’ll find this byproduct in the pet food as well — "chicken fat (preserved with … )." Gah…I feel like retching.

You’ll find links to the information at http://www.raising-rabbits.com/raw-cat-food.html, and http://www.raising-rabbits.com/raw-dog-food.html.

The best thing we can all do is refuse to buy dry kibbled pet food (I think canned pet food is somewhat better than dried, however the word ‘meal’ is the dead giveaway in any case).

What our dogs and cats really need is raw meat and bones. They’ll be so much more healthy when they eat real food that is appropriate for their species. Their skin rashes and allergies all clear up, their health begins to glow, and even the fleas head for the hills. At least, I haven’t treated my cats for a year…and I haven’t seen a flea in all that time. Amazing. The research is at that rabbit website, because you can feed raw rabbit to dogs and cats, too.

Does adult cat food eaten by a kitten have any major ramifications for the kittens overall health?

February 15th, 2010

We have a 20 month and a 5 month old cat living together, so we need to watch when they’re eating their wet food together, because the the kitten will try and eat the adults food, which we stop.

I’m mainly asking because a friend who also has had cats for years, from kittens, has only ever fed them adult food and they’ve grown up fine.

it duzent matter if its cat food or kitten food
