Is storing pet food in a galvanized steel trash can safe?

I’m having a mice problem and I heard a lot of people use galvanized steel trash cans to store horse feed so that mice can’t get to them. Would this be a good idea for storing my dog food? I heard that it might be hazardous to store your pet’s food in galvanized steel, but couldn’t find anything to back that up. Anyone know anything?
because dog food isn’t acid, and you aren’t cooking in the can, the dog should be fine.
galvanizing (zinc) is what would be potentially unsafe- stainless would be better, but it should be fine because it’s just kibble

One of our friends stores his dog food, chicken feed and everything else in galvanized steel. It not only keeps the mice out, but raccoons out also.
They will be fine.

I don’t think it would be unsafe, but since those trash cans don’t *seal*, the food may not stay as fresh as if it were in something like a Rubbermaid sealable container or the likes of one. Also, won’t ants be able to get in?

I prefer plastic, but galvanized will work. Some dog food companies actually produce plastic food containers as promo items.

I kept dry horse feed in both galvanized and plastic bins for years (I used trash cans with locking lids) and never had a problem.
I currently keep my kibble in plastic bins like these:

They are inside now, but I used to keep them out in the garage, where there are many mice, but the kibble stayed clean and mouse free. They are made so you can lock them if necessary.

What size dog do you own? We own a small (Maltese toy poodle mix) dog, and we keep her food in a large tin, like the ones that you get near the holidays with popcorn in them. We had a mouse problem at our home, and none of the food ended up eaten, but like I said, we have a small dog, and this may not be a good idea if you’re storing a bag of food for a large dog. It may be a good idea to store the food in the bag within the container, but I doubt hat the container is harmful. I hope this helped you some.
